History

Heading into Sunday’s game the series between these two historic franchises is tied 6-6, with the Lions having won their last four meetings.

The first time the Lions and Raiders played against each other was a Thanksgiving Day showdown at Tiger Stadium on November 26, 1976. This also marked the only time that John Madden coached a game in Detroit, and found himself on the losing side as the Lions successfully defended the den with a 28-14 victory. One of the Lions all-time greats, running back Mel Farr put together 104 yards on 20 carries while catching one pass for 58 yards.

The Black Hole would prove to be too much for the Lions as they’d go on to lose in 1974 (35-19) and in 1978 (29-17) before heading back to Detroit for the next game in their saga.

1981 at the Pontiac Silverdome, the Lions shutout the Raiders to even their series at two games all with the 16-0 game. Billy Sims would score the Lions only touchdown of the game, and put together a nice day with 133 yards on 21 carries. Lions fans may remember this game not for the win, but for the malfunctions of the lights, and the smoke bomb that went off in the stands.

In 1984, three years after the Lions evened the series, the Raiders (now from Los Angeles) would travel back to Detroit, this time with a running back that would become a household name, Marcus Allen (56 yards rushing and 93 receiving.) The Raiders would go on to stifle the Lions with a 24-3 win at the Silverdome and get to Detroit’s quarterbacks eight times throughout the game.

1987 would prove to be more of the same for the Lions as they would drop this game to Los Angeles in a lopsided effort of 27-7. Detroit would give up 171 on the ground, led by Marcus Allen with 79 and a score, while Detroit only put up 47 total rushing yards.

1990. Monday Night Football. The Bo and Barry Show. In this infamous showdown, the Lions ultimately lost a heartbreaker 38-31, however, it’s what happened on the ground that fans remember most. Raiders great, Bo Jackson rushed for 129 yards on 18 attempts and one touchdown. On the other side of the ball, all-time great Barry Sanders put together 176 yards on 25 carries for two trips to the end zone.

Detroit would need to wait six years to match up with the Raiders again, and in 1996 they traveled to the relocated — again — Raiders back in Oakland. In this meeting, Oakland would have an answer for Sanders as they held him to only 36 yards on nine carries. This game would be memorable for the Lions receiving corps of Herman Moore (10 catches, 109 yards, two touchdowns) Johnnie Morton (8 catches, 109 yards, touchdown) and Brett Perriman (seven catches, 75 yards) with Scott Mitchell dropping back a sweltering 50 times. This air attack would not be enough to hold off the Raiders and the Lions licked their wounds back home with a 37-21 loss.

In 2003, the Lions were able to turn the corner in their series with the Joey Harrington (13-21, 117 yards, touchdown) led Detroit Lions winning their first meeting with the Raiders in seven years (1996) with a 23-13 win. 2007 (36-21), 2011 (28-27), and 2015 (18-13) wins in favor of the Detroit Lions would go on to even the series with the Raiders heading into Sunday’s Week 9 game.
