Payout on a $2 trifecta ticket.: $10,477.62.Average for the past 21 years as the trifecta has only been offered since 1994 in the Kentucky Derby. With averages like that it’s no wonder many a horseplayer looks forward to the Kentucky Derby! Here’s a closer look at each pool over the time period. Country House became the 2nd longest odds Derby winner in the 145 year history of the race paying $132.40. Code of Honor was elevated to 2nd followed by the other Mott runner Tacitus now in 3rd. Next came two of the Bob Baffert runners, Improbable and Game Winner. The $1 superfecta paid out more than $75,000. 2017 Kentucky Derby winner, payouts: Trifecta, superfecta deliver big money. Viewed as one of the most competitive fields in years, there was no clear cut standout going into the race. Brother Derek, winner of four straight including the Santa Anita Derby, was made the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 but drifted out to nearly 8-1 by post time.Meanwhile, Sweetnorthernsaint went from 10–1 on the morning line to the post-time favorite at 11-2 off of his.

If you’re in the business of betting horses, chances are you’ve found yourself daydreaming about hitting it big at the track. The only real way you can do so is by playing the exotics, and more specifically the trifecta and superfecta options. The Kentucky Derby is perhaps the most famous horse race on the planet, and it is very trifecta friendly if you know how to put together the best possible ticket. Sure, the Derby features 20 horses all heading into the starting gate with hope. However, once you break down the race, there are only a handful of horses that have a legitimate shot of winning. The trifecta allows you to use multiple horses and multiple combinations and possibly connect with a big winner. For example, if you were to play the $1 trifecta in last year’s Derby, you would have walked away with $11,475. In 2017, a $2 trifecta bet paid just short of $17,000. As you can see, the payout is well worth the reward if you can just find the right combinations to use on your ticket.

For the sake of this article, I’ll be looking at what kind of trifecta combinations you could potentially use in order to turn a solid profit on Derby Day.

Outside Is Best

The post-position draw for the Kentucky Derby happened on Tuesday, and we found out that morning-line favorite, Tiz the Law, will be leaving from stall 17. That shouldn’t be an issue for him as he generally likes to be up near the pace and that wide start will allow him to navigate his way to the front without getting boxed in from either side. Tiz the Law has shown his speed in winning the Florida Derby and then again in the Travers Stakes while prepping for this race. Remember, he also won the first leg of this year’s Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, so there is a lot on the line for the horse and connections.

To his inside, you have Honor A.P, whose morning line odds are set at 5-1. The ridgeling by Honor Code (third in the Breeder’s Cup Classic) has the pedigree to do well in this race thanks to his mom, Hollywood Story, who has a laundry list of graded stakes appearances and a 27-4-6-6 career record worth $1,171,105 in earnings. Honor A.P. will break from stall 16. And if his win in the Santa Anita Derby showed us anything, it’s that this horse has a very quick turn of foot and doesn’t mind sitting off the pace – something he should be able to do based on where he’s leaving the starting gate from. If Mike Smith could work out a stalking trip and have him turning for him with a horse or two to charge down, he should be able to make the trifecta ticket and help you out.

And lastly, from stall 18, Authentic – who was second in the aforementioned Santa Anita Derby – may fancy his chances at upsetting the favorite in this edition of the Derby. Authentic is a quick colt who showed up with an extremely high-class speed effort while winning the Haskell Stakes back in July. If you watch that race, he had the race in hand until a late charge from NY Traffic made the race closer than it really was. If he can figure out a way to work the distance, he should be able to hit the trifecta ticket on Derby Day.

The Bob Baffert Connection

Bob Baffert is one of the best trainers in all of thoroughbred horse racing. He owns more than 3,000 wins and will continue to train horses for the next 10+ years, which will inflate that win total and then some. He’s no stranger to big races, either, as he’s won five Kentucky Derbies, including the 2015 edition with American Pharaoh – who ultimately went on to win the Triple Crown. He also picked up a win in 2018 with Justify. This year he sends out one of the morning-line favorites in Authentic. We touched on Authentic in the above trifecta, but let me just reiterate something. If Authenticate can manage the distance, he should be able to have a great chance at closing hard and getting up into the top three at the wire.

The other Baffert horse is the No. 10 horse, Thousand Words. This Bay horse was purchased for a pretty $1 million as a yearling and was instantly put on the Derby trail thanks to winning the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2). That race showed how gutsy this horse is as he was in a three-way tussle down the stretch and pulled away to win by a neck. He has the pedigree to go long, and his morning line price of 15/1 is awfully enticing for bettors looking to back one of the most successful Kentucky Derby trainers in history.

To round of the trifecta, you can essentially put anyone else in for third as the ticket would look something like this:

$1 trifecta – 10, 18 with 10, 18 with All
$1 trifecta – 10, 18 with ALL with 10, 18
1$ trifecta – All with 10, 18 with 10, 18.

Each ticket would cost $32 to play for a total of $96

The following is a list of the highest exacta payouts in Kentucky Derby history. To win an exacta bet, a bettor must have the first two horses in a race picked in exact order.

This list is for official Kentucky Derby exacta payouts that were made at Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby is run. I can remember in the 1980s going to Monmouth Park and betting on the Kentucky Derby.

At that time, Monmouth Park would simulcast the race, but have their own betting pools for wagering on the race. So the exacta payouts at Monmouth Park would be different than the exacta payouts at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.

In recent years, almost all the money bet on the Kentucky Derby, no matter at which track it is bet, goes into the same betting pools. So the exacta payouts today are pretty much all the same. All win amounts are for a $2 exacta wager.

Kentucky Derby Trifecta Payouts History

By far, the highest official exacta payout in Kentucky Derby history came in 2005, when the exacta combination of Giacomo winning and Closing Argument finishing second paid a whopping $9,814.80 for a $2 bet.

Giacomo went off at odds of 50.30 to one in 2005, while Closing Argument was the longest odds horse in the race at 71.60 to one. That produced a record massive exacta payout of $9,814.80. Congrats to all the lucky bettors who had this exacta.

2. 2009 Kentucky Derby – $2,074.60

The second highest exacta payout in Kentucky Derby history came in 2009, when the combination of Mine That Bird winning and Pioneerof the Nile running second paid $2,074.60.

That is another massive exacta payout, but it is almost five times less than the largest exacta payout in Kentucky Derby history. That shows just how massive a payout the Giacomo/Closing Argument exacta was.

In the 2009 Kentucky Derby, Mine That Bird went off at odds of 50.60, producing the second highest paying winner in Kentucky Derby history, while Pioneerof the Nile went off at odds of 6.30.

3. 2002 Kentucky Derby – $1,300.80

The exacta combination of War Emblem running first and Proud Citizen running second paid $1,300.80 in the 2002 Kentucky Derby. That is the third highest official exacta payout in Kentucky Derby history.

War Emblem went off at odds of 20.50 to one, while Proud Citizen had odds of 23.50 to one. The pair basically ran around the track in first and second place for almost the entire race. That happens quite a bit in regular thoroughbred horse races, but is not too common for the Kentucky Derby in recent times.

4. 2001 Kentucky Derby – $1,229.00

Previous Kentucky Derby Payouts

The fourth highest official exacta payout in Kentucky Derby history came in 2001, when the combination of Monarchos running first and Invisible Ink running second paid $1,229.00.

Monarchos went off at odds of 10.50 to one, while Invisible Ink had odds of 55.00 to one. Obviously, the key to this exacta was the much higher odds Invisible Ink running second. Not an impossible pick, as Invisible Ink was trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez.

5. 1992 Kentucky Derby – $854.40

The 1992 Run for the Roses produced the fifth highest official exacta payout when Lil E. Tee ran first and Casual Lies ran second. Lil E. Tee went off at odds of 16.80 to one, while Casual Lies had odds of 29.90 to one.

Kentucky Derby Superfecta Payouts History

In the 1992 Kentucky Derby, 18 horses ran, but there were only 11 betting choices in the race. That is because many of the horses were coupled as betting interests, meaning they ran under the same number. If you bet coupled horses, if any one of them wins, for betting purposes, all of them win.

Kentucky Derby Trifecta Payout History

In recent times, almost all horses run uncoupled in the Kentucky Derby, meaning they each have their own number and all money bet on each horse counts only towards that horse. If that had been the case in the 1992 Kentucky Derby, when Arazi was the heavy betting favorite, the Lil E. Tee and Casual Lies exacta could have paid considerably more money.
